Huffing and Puffng [1]

Twin "jets" of hot gas stream away from a nascent star in this recent view from ALMA, an array of radio telescopes in Chile. The jets form as magnetic fields eject material from a disk around the protostar, known as CARMA-7. The image shows that the flow ranges from thin to thick, indicating that more material is ejected at some times than at others. Astronomers have detected 22 distinct ejection events in the jets, which ram into the jets of other protostars. [B. Saxton (NRAO/AUI/NSF); A. Plunkett et al.; ALMA (NRAO/ESO/NAOJ)]
