Spiral Beauty [1]

The beautiful spiral galaxy Messier 77 spins through the universe in this recent image from the Very Large Telescope in Chile. The galaxy, which is about 47 million light-years away, shows beautiful spiral arms, dark lanes of dust, and prominent stellar nurseries (the red blobs). Many more-distant galaxies are visible through M77's disk. [European Southern Observatory]
