Beautiful Demise [1]

A colorful cocoon of gas, known as IC 4406, surrounds a dying star in this new image from the European Southern Observatory. Known as a planetary nebula, the cocoon is being expelled from the surface of the star. The image was made possible by a new adaptive optics system, which compensates for the blurring effects of Earth's atmosphere. [ESP/J. Richard (CRAL)]
