Liftoff! [1]

The Ingenuity helicopter captured this shot of its own shadow as it made its first flight on Mars on April 19. The four-pound (1.8 kg) chopper reached a maximum altitude of 10 feet (3 meters) and stayed aloft for 39 seconds. Several more test flights are scheduled for the next few weeks. Ingenuity is intended as a technology demonstrator, perhaps leading the way to larger and more capable craft on Mars in the future. [NASA/JPL]
