The first full-color view of the universe from James Webb Space Telescope, released on July 11, shows a massive galaxy cluster as well as many other galaxies behind it. The gravity of the cluster, SMACS 0723, both magnifies and distorts the light from more-distant galaxies. As a result, some of the galaxies form skinny arcs of light around the center of the galaxy cluster. This is an infrared image compiled from 12.5 hours of observations, and is the deepest picture of this region of the sky ever seen, providing detailed views of galaxies that are billions of light-years away.
