Getting Together [1]

Two spiral galaxies are beginning the long process of merging in this new image from the Gemini North Telescope in Hawaii. NGC 4567 (top) and NGC 4568 will stage violent outbursts of starbirth over the next few hundred million years as they ram together and twirl around each other, creating long streamers of stars and gas clouds. Eventually, they will settle down as an almost featureless elliptical galaxy. [International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA]
