Mixed-Up Galaxies [1]

A pair of spiral galaxies are mixing it up in this recent image from the Gemini South telescope. Collectively known as NGC 7727, the galaxies began their cosmic dance a billion years ago. The interactions have pulled huge streamers of stars and gas away from the galaxies, and triggered the birth of millions of new stars. The galaxies are in Aquarius, roughly 90 million light-years away. [International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA]
