Circling Darkness
Featured on January 14, 2020
A black hole steals gas from a companion star in this artist's concept. As it flows toward the black hole, the gas forms a disk. The gas is heated to high temperatures, causing the disk to emit copious amounts of X-rays and other forms of energy. Much of what we know about black holes comes from studying these disks.
