Galaxies Galore
Featured on January 11, 2015
A beautiful array of galaxies swirls through space in this recent image from the Gemini Observatory. The galaxies include a face-on spiral, a barred-spiral (lower left), and several ellipticals, which look like fuzzy footballs. The galaxies are members of a group known as VV 166, which is about 300 million light-years away. The largest galaxy in the image, the spiral at top center, is about 180,000 light-years across, or almost twice the diameter of the Milky Way. [Gemini Observatory/AURA]
