Icy Layers
Featured on June 7, 2018
Layers of ice step down toward a sandy plain (top) near the south pole of Mars in this recent image from Trace Gas Orbiter, a spacecraft that is studying the Martian atmosphere. The layers are part of the polar ice cap, which consists primarily of frozen water, with a smaller amount of frozen carbon dioxide. The color has been enhanced. [ESA/Roscosmos/CaSSIS]
