Missed Opportunity
Featured on May 13, 2023
When NASA cancelled the final three planned Apollo missions, in the early 1970s, it abandoned three possible landing sites. Although not formally selected, one possibility was Tycho Crater, shown here in a view from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The crater is young and fresh, so it would have given scientists a chance to sample different types of lunar materials from the other Apollo landing sites. [NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University]
