Shocking Behavior
Featured on September 15, 2023
An embryonic star fires high-speed jets of particles away from its poles, forming shockwaves as it rams into gas and dust around it, in this false-color image from James Webb Space Telescope. The young object is still growing as it pulls in more gas and dust from its enviroment. Known as Herbig-Haro 211, the growing protostar is about 1,000 light-years away, in the constellation Perseus. Webb imaged the object in infrared light, which is invisible to human eyes. [ESA-Webb/NASA/CSA/Tom Ray (Dublin)]
